Central Park Zoo

Central Park Zoo

by Nina Bhagat

The exquisite, state-of-the-art exhibits are what make the Central Park Zoo stand out among all the other zoos. Located in New York City, the Central Park Zoo harbors a large assortment of species, both large and small.

After hearing about all these extraordinary exhibits, I decided that it was time that I visit the Central Park Zoo. I was fascinated not by one or two exhibits, but by several of them. The “Polar Circle” exhibit is one that held my attention for a great period of time. The two polar bears, Gus and Ida, are the primary guests who reside in the “Polar Circle” and seem to attract the attention of most of the people. I found it interesting that the conditions are set so precisely for the polar bears. Each bear has an air-conditioned cave that they are able to lounge around in when conditions outdoors become too hot and humid. There is also an arctic pool in which they spend time playing and gallivanting. A glass window allowed me to watch some of their underwater adventures and observe how Gus and Ida interact with each other.

Another great attraction that fascinated me is the newest exhibit, the Snow Leopard, which is currently an endangered species. Chocolate, Zoe, and Bo are the names of the zoo’s three snow leopards, which are displayed behind a glass window for the public to see. At one point, one of the snow leopards came very close to the window, and I felt as if it was right next to me. Being this close to the vicious cat, I was able to get an up-close look at it and even gaze into its ferocious eyes. In the zoo, the original habitat of the snow leopards has been recreated; there are grasslands, boulders, and platforms which they bounce around on playfully.

The “Temperate Territory” is another zone that attracted my attention. The “Temperate Territory” is where the California Sea Lions and the Japanese Snow Monkeys reside. There is a pool with an island of rocks in the center where the sea lions and snow monkeys play. I was captivated by how the sea lions move and work their way up
